If you're looking for something low-key and budget-friendly, especially when the weather’s nice, grab some drinks from Family Mart and head to Jing’an ParkJing’an Sculpture Park, or Fuxing Park. Hang out, walk around the park, find a cozy spot, and let the conversation flow.

Perfect for: A first date where you want to keep things chill and see if there’s chemistry.

Insider tip: Afterward, if the vibe feels right, head over to Thai Gallery inside Jing’an Park or some local eateries by INS Park next to Fuxing Park for dinner, or grab a casual bite in nearby malls—there are plenty of restaurant options to keep things flexible.

2. Cafés and Gelatos Around FFC and Jing’an

For a cozy coffee date, Bread etc. on West Nanjing Road or South Xiangyang Road is a great spot to meet up, grab a bite, and ease into the day with relaxed conversation. If you’re looking for something a bit more under the radar, the small cafés along Fengxian Lu (Jing’an) or Yongjia Lu/Yongkang Lu(FFC), offer a laid-back setting for a quiet chat over coffee or tea or Gelatos...

Perfect for: A daytime date when you’re still getting to know each other.

Insider tip: Take your time exploring the area after, maybe walk around and stumble into one of the hidden shops or galleries in the neighborhood.

3. Suzhou Creek/West Bund Walk or Bike Ride

For the more active couple, why not grab a couple of shared bikes and ride along Suzhou Creek or West Bund? It’s a scenic route that gives you plenty of time to enjoy the views. If you choose the Suzhou Creek route You can finish your ride with a drink at Rooster or the laid-back vibe of Beer Lady. If you choose the West Bund route, you can select either Tianzifang (Dapuqiao) or Former French Conccession to carry the night on.

4. Dinner and Drinks at Shankangli area

If your idea of the perfect date includes excellent food and cocktails, head over to Shankangli. It’s a relatively new hotspot with food and drink options, offering something for every taste. You'll find it here whether you’re in the mood for fusion cuisine, cocktails, or craft beer. Shankangli has plenty of food and drinks options.

Perfect for: A laid-back but delicious dinner with an international twist.

Insider tip: If you don’t live in the city centre, there are also Laowai Jie in the Hongqiao area and Lidoway and Panlong Xintiandi in the Qingpu area.

Jing’an and Shankangli Area

Alimentari, Totino Panino, RIINK and Parlay. The Expat Friendly Shed and Yugo Grill are also within walking distance. Yugo Grill is known for its Balkan-inspired cuisine and cosy atmosphere. It’s a great spot for couples who want something a bit off the beaten path, with the bonus of excellent drinks. The Shed is known for its daily deals, like Wednesday Wings Night, for only ¥2 per chicken wing, which is very popular.

5. Art Meets Dinner: Fotografiska+MONA / MAP + Roof P.M.

For culture lovers, start your date with a visit to Fotografiska—a sleek and stylish photography museum that’s always got something inspiring on display. Follow it up with a romantic dinner at MONA, a chic restaurant nearby (but remember, they’re closed on Mondays!). This date offers a perfect mix of culture and cuisine.


Want to do something similar but on Monday? Head to Museum of Art Pudong (MAP) in Lujiazui Pudong, and the modern fine dining restaurant on the bund with a stunning view of the bund is something you may want to do for a special occasion to please your date/partner/significant partner etc.

Insider tip: Make sure to check the museum’s current exhibitions beforehand to pick something that will spark conversation.

6. Joy City Ferris Wheel Date

For something fun and playful, take your date to Joy City. You’ll find plenty of dining options on the outdoor level, but the real highlight is the Ferris wheel, which offers beautiful views of the city. It’s a whimsical experience that brings a touch of excitement and nostalgia to your date.

Jiletang Hotspring in Putuo is one of those fancy public bath houses where you can lounge, chat, and even play game consoles while enjoying the warmth. It’s a great way to unwind and have a more intimate date without too many distractions. These places make you feel like kings and queens and are just so relaxing.

Perfect for: A relaxed, intimate date where you can focus on connecting. Those who want to try Bathhouses don’t mind mild same-sex nudity in the bathhouses.

Insider tip: No need to bring anything. It has mostly everything. Men and Women are separated in the spa area; after you finish your bath, you will be given a copy pyjama/kimono/uniform, and you can hang out at the common area where free-flow non-alcoholic beverages and fruits are available; restaurant and massage services within the venue are at additional cost for most of them.

8. Arcade Fun at Cages Sports Bar

If you’re still testing the waters or want a more laid-back vibe, Cages is a great spot for some low-pressure fun. Play arcade games, grab a meal, and enjoy some drinks in a lively, unpretentious atmosphere. It’s perfect if you want to keep things casual while still having a great time.

Perfect for: First dates where you want to keep things light and fun.

Insider tip: Show your competitive side with some arcade games or hit the batting cages if you feel sporty! If you order food there, Monday night is all-you-can-play. Other daily deals, such as wings nights on Tuesday or pizza nights on Thursday, are also worth checking out. The place can be crowded during major sports events like the World Cup Final, Formula 1, Premier League, and others.

9. Daning Park and Cinema Date

If you’re around the newer part of Jing’an, particularly Daning Park, this area has plenty of great options for a relaxed date. Start with a stroll through the park and then head to Jiuguang Mall, where you’ll find an IMAX cinema for a movie date. After the movie, there are plenty of great food choices nearby, making it a perfect all-in-one date.

10. Hongkou Area: North Bund, Sinar Mars & The Pearl

Hongkou district has undergone many transformations in the past decade; the North Bund Park, right opposite the Sinar Mars Complex, is an excellent location for a date. It is spacious and has a beautiful view of Lujiazui. There is also a Magic Jungle Rope course that adults can also participate in, while Sinar Mars is also a great mall to hang out at. The W Hotel Terrace is definitely my favourite spot to have a date, get a drink, and enjoy the view from the terrace. Another favourite thing I love doing is going to the Pearl to enjoy some of the BEST live performances. You can follow them on their WeChat official account to view their monthly calendar, buy tickets directly on their WeChat miniprogram, and pick a show from a great variety that you both are interested in enjoying the show with your love!
